MARK TWAIN HEALTH CARE DISTRICT

  San Andreas

Description

Calaveras County Health and Wellness since 1946

The Mark Twain Health Care District, a public agency, was formed by a vote of the people of Calaveras County in a special election held August 27th, 1946. The political boundaries of the Mark Twain Health Care District are comprised of the entire County of Calaveras.

The Mark Twain Health Care District, as a public agency, is subject to the Brown Act and the Public Records Act.

Mark Twain District Hospital was built in 1951 with funding from the newly enacted Hill-Burton Act. In 1989 the District Board voted to align with St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton and this partnership affiliated with Catholic Healthcare West in 1996. Catholic Health Care West changed its name to Dignity Health in 2012.

Mark Twain Health District retains 50% ownership in all of the facility assets while the day-to-day operations of the hospital are the responsibility of the Mark Twain Medical Center Corporation. The operational lease agreement with the Mark Twain Medical Center Corporation expires on December 31, 2019. The Mark Twain Health District Board has appointed an ad hoc Lease Review Committee to determine the best process to use as we move forward in evaluating an extension or renewal of the current agreement. The District receives a property tax allocation each year from Calaveras County, and provides funding to support health care projects through the partnership with the hospital. The focus of today's health care district is to provide direct support and education for the health care needs of the communities served by the district.
